Ferguson wanted Ronaldo to join Barcelona not Real Madrid

Ferguson wanted Ronaldo to join Barcelona not Real Madrid

Sir Alex Ferguson personally contacted Barcelona in an attempt to stop Cristiano Ronaldo leaving Manchester United for Real Madrid, according to a new biography of the Portugal star.

The former United manager was unimpressed by Madrid‘s courting of his prized asset, and ‘Cristiano Ronaldo: The Biography’ claims the Premier League giants wrote a letter to president Ramon Calderon asking him to stop all public overtures.

With Madrid growing ever confident of signing Ronaldo in the summer of 2008, Ferguson looked to pull Barcelona into the world-record chase but the player had already made up his mind.

“[Sir Alex] flew to Portugal to cut off Madrid’s bid directly,” Guillem Balague writes in AS. “He was clear that he wouldn’t allow his arm to be twisted. This was about much more than a transfer, it was about maintaining his authority in the eyes of the world.

“For weeks he’d pursued a Machiavellian approach of sorts, but seeing that he couldn’t persuade Cristiano to stay he made contact with Barcelona to encourage them to bid. Anyone but Real Madrid. But Cristiano had made up his mind about where he wanted to go.”

Ferguson then changed tack and looked to reach a “gentleman’s agreement” with Ronaldo’s long-time agent and friend Jorge Mendes and Madrid to delay a transfer just weeks after winning the Champions League for the second time.

Balague continues: “Ferguson sought a gentlemen’s agreement that he’d already run by Mendes. He wouldn’t let him leave this year, he said, but if he behaved well over the next twelve months, if he gave enough to the club and Madrid came back with a record fee, he wouldn’t stand in his way.”

Ronaldo eventually joined Real Madrid for a then-world record fee of £80 million in 2009.

Chelsea intensifies Andy Carroll Chase

Reports making the rounds today reveals that Chelsea are hugely interested in signing Andy Carroll from West Ham this month.

The Premier League champions has suffered a third successive goalless draw, for the first time in their history, against Leicester City on Saturday seems to have lost faith in Álvaro Morata.

The Spaniard has scored only twice in the top flight since mid-November and has gone five games without a goal.

Antonio Conte has now turned to Carroll for rescue as the Italian man continues to be reluctant to play Michy Batshuayi who will possibly be going on loan to Sevilla if a replacement can be secured.

Andy Carroll signed for West Ham from Liverpool in 2013 for £15m, and has seen his impact limited by injury in the years since.

Verge24 understands that the move for Chelsea signing Carroll may be a short-term solution before a summer recruitment drive, and West Ham would take some persuasion to part with Carroll on a six‑month loan deal.

David Moyes suggested last week that he would not want to see any of his forwards depart. Yet that may not dissuade Chelsea from exploring the option, reflecting the need to pep up the forward line amid a cluttered schedule.

Kelechi Iheanacho Going Nowhere – Claude Puel

Leicester City coach Claude Puel has dismissed speculation of his £25 million striker Kelechi Iheanacho leaving due to lack of playing time this January.

Puel refused to write off the former Manchester City forward, who has found the back of the net just once for the club this season.

Kelechi Iheanacho signed for Leicester in the summer from Manchester City but has made just two Premier League starts for the foxes.

The Nigerian Super Eagles attacking forward is expected to be on his way out of the club for a possible playing time in a quest to guarantee his place in the team to represent Nigeria in Russia later this year.

Last week, Nigeria national team handler Gernot Rohr said that he expects Iheanacho and his teammate Ahmed Musa to leave the King Power Stadium because of their lack of playing time, Puel has however dismissed any exit talk. According to him;

“We don’t know about what the national trainer said. We will see. We have discussions with different players. For example Iheanacho is a young player, arrived this season, and he will stay with us.

“I cannot talk about details about players. It is important to have a good balance in the team and have a good game time for the players.

“Iheanacho is a young player, he signed this season with us and we have to develop him. I hope he can have more game time in the second half of the season.”

He is a young player who arrives in a good team where there is competition and he needs to keep working and improve.”

Leicester will visit Chelsea on Saturday in the Premier League with Jamie Vardy fit after a groin injury.
