Police says Ozubulu Church Attackers have been arrested

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra Garba Umar has said that some suspects have been arrested in connection with Sunday’s killings at St. Philips Catholic Church, Ozubulu, in the state.

Umar told newsmen on Monday that the number of those arrested would not be disclosed so as not to jeopardise ongoing investigation into the massacre of 11 persons by unknown gunmen.

The gunmen attacked the church while Mass was going on, and apart from the dead, no fewer than 18 others have been hospitalised for gunshot injuries.

The commissioner had on Sunday said that the attack was an isolated case of a feud between two individuals from the same community. He added that the police had contacted some persons who would be useful in the investigation.

Meanwhile, Ikenna Ofodeme, Transition Committee Chairman of Ekwusigo Council, has said that his people are still in shock after the gun attack at the Ozubulu.

Ofodeme told newsmen on Monday in Awka that the trauma among the resident was because the tragedy was not expected. He added that such gruesome attack had never happened in the South-East.

“It was a black Sunday for us; we are still in shock because it has never happened in the South-East. We hear of this type of attack from other parts of the world but it’s sad that it happened in my constituency,” he said.

He disclosed that he had been part of the rescue operations and that 40 worshipers were affected, out of whom 12 persons had died. The chairman said that the dead were nine women, a baby girl and two men.

One of the survivors of the attack, Samuel Ndulue, who got gunshot wounds, was full of thanks to God for sparing his life.

At the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, where he is receiving treatment, he said he was gradually coming to terms with what struck him and others.

How Corrupt PDP Defectors Financed Buhari’s Campaign

Peoples Democratic Party, PDP members at the National Assembly has fired back at President Muhammadu Buhari over his statement saying that looters would not return to power in 2019.

President Buhari, in a shroud reference to the PDP, on Thursday at an interactive session with community leaders and stakeholders in Kano said;

“Those who ruled Nigeria without vision and looted the nation ’ s treasury are the same people boasting that they will displace the APC government and return to office .

“ We will wait and see , if they think Nigerians are ignorant . They have the guts to declare their intention to reclaim office . ”

However, the PDP caucus in the House of Representatives , on Saturday , said that Buhari was a major beneficiary of funds allegedly looted by PDP leaders .

Mrs. Binta Bello, the Deputy Minority Whip of the House made the statement saying that Buhari should rather apologise to Nigerians for being unable to fulfill his campaign promises instead of attacking the PDP the opposition party. In her words;

“He (Buhari ) has the right to attack us and we have the right to criticise him too by telling him the truth. That is the beauty of democracy .

“ The people he now calls looters were the same people who funded his campaign in 2015 .

“ His campaign in 2015 was different from his campaign in previous years. In 2015 , he had all the money to spend . The looters , who left the PDP , gave him the money . Why didn ’ t he reject it or tell Nigerians how he raised the campaign money ?

“ Let’ s face the facts , the President has failed in delivering his campaign promises. Where is the 2017 budget ? What can he boast to have achieved in terms of implementing the budget ?
“ They can see that he is in power and yet there is nothing to celebrate in terms of achievement . PDP has achievements it can point to . ”

Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the senator representing Imo East) also described Buhari’s comment as far from the truth. According to him;

“How can he say our party is a party of looters ? What is happening in APC now ? Are they not looting ? I don’ t agree with him . ”

Similarly, Senator Mathew Urhoghide totally disagreed with President Buhari saying;

“I don’ t agree with the President because 80 per cent of the looters in the then PDP government are now with the President in APC and are still looting and others are waiting to loot, ”.
