Basel 1:0 Manchester United: Wasteful United Punished

Manchester United’s hopes of qualifying into the Champions League knockout phase has been hanged on a knife as Michael Lang’s 89th-minute strike snatched a dramatic 1-0 victory for Basel at St. Jakob-Park.

Manchester United needed anything but a defeat to reach the last 16 and looked well on course to do that after creating a host of chances in a dominant first-half display.

Hoever, Jose Mourinho’s men were punished for their wastefulness as a spirited second-half display from Basel culminated in Lang converting the winner in the final minute.

The defeat means United must win or draw in their final group stage match against CSKA Moscow to qualify, while Basel head to Benfica looking to seal their own progression.
